At one time I had 3 Iloks going since then I've consolidated everything to one Ilok 2. I personally have never had one single issue with Ilok over the years. If they were Ilok or simple challenge/response I would have bought some of them because they do sound great. Frankly it's the reason I haven't bought any of the SSL Duende native plugins. I travel a lot and I don't always have internet. Personally I'm not for using cloud based protection if it requires an internet connection. Now there will be yet another form of copy protection to deal with. As well as all the plug ins I have that are challenge response. The problem for me is I still have to use my Ilok for other things such as Protools, Mcdsp, Softube, Slate, ect then I also have a Steinberg Key.
I have mixed feelings about waves moving from Ilok. They're the cause of increased costs in the IPs they steal and dangerous laws that are costly on more than just a monetary level I think it is part our responsibility to make illegitimate users of intellectual property feel like the assholes they are barely uses waves but wtf, woohoo anyway+1 barely uses waves but wtf, woohoo anyway Losing a single USB port isn't so bad with a ~$35 8-port hub around but I do prefer the challenge/response type of copy-protection. I hope that the software engineers come up with a way that is un-hackable or some way to tag legit mixes in subcode (polluting the audio I guess) so that we could drag the pirate hacks over the coals when they try to go commercial Kids be like, "Yo, you got the Waves man?" and I'm like, "Yes but I paid for mine" and they be laughing like, "Why buy them?" yet they're still doing nothing but polluting the local airwaves with mediocre drivel.
90 plugins that users don't even understand. The hacks have definitely encouraged the "twist knobs till it sounds OK (but is hellishly awful, actually)" culture. I was like, "just split the channel, overhype and compress the high end on one and re-combine them or something, it'll be close enough" and he gave me the blank look. I had some bulletmagnet begging me for Waves hacks last week so he could "finish his record" that he needed the API channel strips so badly for. I might get LOICed for saying it but I'm done with the nOObs, pirates and hacks polluting this business.
